Souskluitjies (dumplings)


• 120 g (215 ml) cake flour
• 10 ml baking powder
• 1 ml salt
• 15 ml butter
• 1 egg
• 125 ml milk
• 2,5 ml ground cinnamon
• 15 ml sugar
• 15 ml butter Syrup
• 5 ml butter
• 30 ml sugar
• 2 ml ground cinnamon


Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together in a mixing bowl. Rub the butter into the mixture until it resembles breadcrumbs. Whisk the eggs and milk together and add to the flour mixture. Mix well until it forms a stiff dough. Allow to rest for 15 minutes. place 500 ml water in a pot and add a pinch of salt. Bring to the boil, then turn the heat down low. Spoon tablespoonfuls of the dough into the water and cover. (Don’t put too many spoonfuls in the pot at once.) Cook for 8 – 10 minutes. Mix the cinnamon and sugar. Remove
the dumplings from the water and place in a bowl. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and dot with 15 ml butter.

Make the syrup: Add the butter, sugar and cinnamon to the water in which the dumplings were cooked.
pour the syrup over the dumplings and serve immediately.
